Facilities for the Fire Service
Fire service lobbies above ground, non residential settings.
In non residential settings Fire Fighting Lobbies may be required where the radius for hose lines would exceed 45m from one FF lobby or 60m from two or more lobbies. These hose lengths also apply to car parks. The extract rate here could be required to achieve 5m³/s during fire fighting operations.
Power supplies.
A system comprising of 24V actuators can be controlled by a battery powered control unit. Normally the mains power supplies provide a trickle charge to the 24V batteries; on activation of the control unit it is the batteries that drive the actuator. Batteries can last up to 72 hours.
If mechanical fan sets are used to extract smoke then a dual power supply is required or an essential life safety supply. You may assume that a Fire Fighting Lift will have a secondary supply, and a ventilated lobby. The only other viable option is a generator.
