Case Studies
Museumplein - Amsterdam
In the early hours of 26 December 2000, a Porsche convertible car caught fire in the Museumplein underground car park in Amsterdam. Within a few minutes the fire had destroyed the convertible roof and the car was ablaze. At approximately 01.00 the fire was detected and within minutes the fire brigade had been alerted. The PSB Impulse Ventilation System within the car park activated to funnel the smoke and by the time the fire brigade arrived the smoke was under control.
Villa Area PSB test - Amsterdam
All products used by the PSB have been thoroughly tested and approved. Along with cold smoke tests, a number of fire tests have been undertaken including at the Villa Arena Car Park in Amsterdam, Europe's largest single storey underground car park. The test was overseen by the Amsterdam Fire Brigade and involved lighting one car, parked between two other cars. Because of the high-density of the multi-criteria detectors, the PSB system detected the fire and was activated automatically on to fire ventilation mode within three minutes.
Almada Forum - Portugal
The largest car park in Europe to have pollution and smoke-control provided by Impulse Ventilation System is the Almada Forum shopping Centre in Portugal. The Forum chose PSB to design, manufacture and install the system. As Portugal’s second largest shopping centre, with 174 000 m2 of car park on two levels, providing space for around 5000 vehicles, the Forum needed a large-scale solution from a trusted company. The PSB system includes over 400 Impulse fans, 16 exhaust fans and equipment for detecting smoke and pollution. The installation was followed by a rigorous and extensive commissioning procedure. Karsten Witt, director of PSB, says: “To have designed and installed a system of this size and importance further strengthens our position as Europe’s leading and most trusted supplier of specialist ventilation systems for underground car parks.”
